Auditions

The Award Winning Slow Burn Theatre is seeking both AEA & non-union performers for their 25-26 Season which includes CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, DISNEY’S FROZEN, BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL, HAIRSPRAY, ALANIS MORISSETTE'S: JAGGED LITTLE PILL and THE BODYGUARD

LORT -LOA Contract 

$776/week min for AEA actors + Pension /5 health weeks

Non-Union

$625 week minimum

 

Travel and housing available for non-local actors

All ethnicities and gender identities strongly encouraged to submit.

 

In-person auditions will be held March 31, April 1 and April 2 from 10AM-10PM at

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts at 201 SW 5th Ave. Ft. Lauderdale, FL. 33312 

 

 

 

 

You must be 18 at the time of the audition. We are not seeking any youth roles at this time.

If you cannot keep your appointment please cancel.

 

Bring two copies of your headshot and resume to the audition and prepare (2) 16-bar in the style of the shows you want to be considered for. Make sure your sheet music is in the correct key for the accompanist.

There will be no dance call on the day of the audition - dance auditions will be a part of invited in-person callbacks held on April 7th & 8th.

 

Video callbacks will be contacted and provided items to record.

 

Video Submissions are being accepted in lieu of in-person auditions. We take video submission seriously with the same casting weight as in person auditions.

Frank Abagnale, Jr. (Male 20s, open to all ethnicities, Tenor G2-C5): An unlikely con artist whose charm, youth, and smarts help him steal millions of dollars and avoid capture in 1960s America (based on a true story!). Inspired by the comic books and TV shows he is obsessed with; Frank escapes his problems by pretending to be someone else but remains deeply insecure. He eventually falls in love with Brenda and desperately tries to change his ways. Seeking a genuine triple threat

 

Carl Hanratty (Male, 50s, open to all ethnicities, Tenor/High Baritone G2-G4): An FBI agent leading the investigation and search for Frank Jr. He is a meticulous and knowledgeable workaholic who feels stunted at work. He dreams of cracking a big case that will prove his worth to the Bureau and allow for upward mobility. His personal life has borne the brunt of his obsession, leaving him divorced and lonely.
 

Frank Abagnale, Sr. (Male, 50s, open to all ethnicities, Baritone F2-G#4): Frank Jr.'s father. Frank Sr. is an upbeat and fast-talking charmer who inadvertently inspires his son’s swindling. He undergoes a series of progressive failures that leave him a lonely alcoholic.

Paula Abagnale (Female, 50s, open to all ethnicities, Alto A3-C5, French accent): Frank Jr.'s mother. During the war, she met Frank Sr. in France, where they had a whirlwind courtship. She is caring and loving but harbors an underlying resentment toward her husband and their life together. She has an affair with Jack Barnes.

 

Brenda Strong (Female, 20s, open to all ethnicities, Alto G3-A5, Louisiana accent): A young nurse and Frank Jr.'s eventual love interest. Hard-working and incredibly capable, Brenda is always trying to prove herself. After running away from a broken engagement, she meets Frank Jr. working in the hospital. She comes to trust him and herself. Seeking a strong vocalist.

 

Carol Strong (Female, 40s-50s, open to all ethnicities, Alto Bb3-A5, Louisiana accent): Brenda's traditional Lutheran mother. She is talkative and boisterous, with just a touch of meddling. The Strongs have deep roots in Louisiana.

 

Roger Strong (Male, 40s-50s, open to all ethnicities, Baritone A2-A4, Louisiana accent): Brenda's conservative Lutheran father. He is stern and interrogatory but reveals himself to be deeply romantic. The Strongs have deep roots in Louisiana. Doubles as: BILL COD - a seasoned FBI agent in the fraud division. A regular guy punching a time clock. Not excited or passionate about his work.

 

Todd Branton (Male, 50s, open to all ethnicities): An FBI agent in the fraud division who tends to be a know-it-all. Doubles as: JACK BARNES

 

Ensemble All gender identities, Ages 18+, open to all ethnicities, especially seeking High Tenor and Strong Belt: An ensemble of confident, strong dancers; to play Assistants; Stewardesses; Pilots; Agents; Partygoers; Doctors; Nurses, etc.

Elsa: (Female, 20’s) Next in line for the throne and has been born with magical powers that can overwhelm her when she becomes afraid and harm others if not handled with care. Fearful of hurting anyone, especially her beloved sister, Anna, Elsa becomes anxious and withdrawn as she grows older, before eventually learning to take control of, and become confident in, her powers. (Vocal range: F#3 to D5) Strong Belter.

 

Anna: (Female, 20’s) Filled with a tremendous amount of light, energy, and love. She is a hopelessly optimistic extrovert at all ages, but as she grows older, she longs for connection with others, especially her sister, Elsa. A strong singer with great comic timing. (Vocal range: G3 to D5)

 

Kristoff: (Male, 20’s) A hardworking ice harvester who has a sarcastic veneer and a rough-around-the-edges exterior that hides a big heart. Taken in by the Hidden Folk when he was young, he loves Pabbie and Bulda dearly, but is a bit of a loner with a reindeer for a best friend until he meets Anna. (Vocal range: G2 to A3) *Offer out on this role, seeking replacements and understudies

 

Hans: (Male, 20’s) The ambitious Prince of the Southern Isles and overlooked thirteenth son of a king. Hans constantly strives to find a way to make good and stand out. He boasts an exceedingly charming facade that fools everyone - including Anna and, ideally, the audience! - into believing he's Prince Charming, when really, he's just a jerk. (Vocal range: G2 to B3)

 

Olaf: (Male) The magical snowman created by Anna and Elsa when they were young. Olaf is endearingly delighted by everything - especially the idea of summer. Goofy and sweet, Olaf should possess a childlike innocence and excellent comic timing. (Vocal range: F#2 to D4) NOTE: This role requires advanced puppeteering skills.

 

Sven: (Male) A reindeer of few words who is a fiercely loyal pal to Kristoff, and loves giving the ice harvester a hard time. NOTE: This role requires advanced puppeteering skills.

 

Pabbie: (Male) One of the mystical leaders of the Hidden Folk who has a soft spot for strays. Along with Bulda, these ever-benevolent parental figures want what's best for Kristoff, even if they are a bit misguided in their efforts.

 

Bulda: (Female) One of the mystical leaders of the Hidden Folk who has a soft spot for strays. Along with Pabbie, these ever-benevolent parental figures want what's best for Kristoff, even if they are a bit misguided in their efforts.

 

Weselton: (Male) A visiting duke who possesses a huge inferiority complex. A bombastic, overbearing sycophant, Weselton's sole purpose is to hobnob with influencers and royalty. (Vocal range: F#2 to D4)

 

Bishop: (Male) The bishop who officiates the coronation and passing of the crown to Elsa. This spiritual supervisor must communicate to the Townspeople of Arendelle in a serious and formal manner.

 

King Agnaar: (Male) The warm-hearted ruler of Arendelle who is committed to protecting both his family and the Townspeople from his eldest daughter's powers.

 

Queen Idona: (Female) The queen who possesses a sense of rightness and kindness that guides her in her protection of her two young girls. A daughter of the Northern Nomads, this queen can communicate with the Hidden Folk of the mountains and therefore understands Elsa's powers deeply.

Carole King: (Female, 18-30)

An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music.  (Vocal range top: Eb5, Vocal range bottom: Eb3)

Gerry Goffin (Male, 18-30) Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more. (Vocal range top: A4, Vocal range bottom D3)

Barry Mann (Male, 18-30) A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable. (Vocal range top: A4, Vocal range bottom: C3)

Cynthia Weil (Female, 18-30) A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she is also extremely likeable. (Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: G3)

 

Don Kirschner (Male, 40-60) An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker. (Vocal range top: C#4, Vocal range bottom: A2)

 

Genie Klein (Female, 40 to 50) Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes.

Edna Turblad  (Male to play Female, age 40 - 50.) Caucasian, large physique. A mother - sincere and honest. 60's Baltimore housewife, larger-than-life character actor with strong singing ability. Exceptional acting and comic timing a must. Simple dance/movement required. Bass-Baritone.

 

Tracy Turnblad  (Female,  18+ plays late teen. Caucasian,). Plus-size teen with aspirations to change the world. She is outgoing, unstoppable, and goodhearted with a vibrant, lovable, spirited personality. Loves to dance. Mezzo-Soprano with a strong theatre/pop belt. Great mover/dancer.

 

Link Larkin (Male, 18+ plays late teen. Caucasian.) Handsome, clean-cut, goodhearted, down-to-earth. The heartthrob of The Corny Collins Show. Strong pop singer and excellent mover. High Bari-Tenor with strong falsetto.

 

Motor Mouth Maybelle (Female, age 40 - 50. Black -African Descent). Seaweed and Little Inez's mother. Queen of Baltimore Soul, a radio DJ. Powerful and inspiring, with an infectious, brassy personality. Soulful, gospel/pop singer. 60's cool and hip. Liberal, part of the civil rights movement. Strong actress with ability to convey depth and light-heartedness. Minimal movement required. Alto with high belt.

 

Corny Collins (Male, age 30 - 35. Caucasian). Host of The Corny Collins Show. Handsome, charming, engaging, smooth. Young Dick Clark type. Strong pop singer, movement a plus. High Baritone.

 

Seaweed J. Stubbs (Male, 18+ plays late teen. Black -African Descent). Cool,street smart, goodhearted. Penny's boyfriend. Great actor with strong young masculine presence. Excellent, soulful, pop singer and great mover. Tenor to A with strong falsetto.

 

Penny Pingleton (Female,18+ plays late teen. Caucasian). Spacy, ditzy, devoted best friend of Tracy. Good sense of comedic timing. Strong high belt, contemporary theatre/pop voice. Good movement/dance skills a plus. Mezzo Soprano.

 

Amber Von Tussle (Female, 18+ plays late teen. Caucasian.) Bratty, spoiled princess who gets her way - popular at school. Tracy's nemesis. Must be an excellent dancer with solid technical training. Mezzo Soprano.

 

Velma Von Tussle (Female, age 35 - 50. Caucasian.) Former beauty queen, Amber's mother. Upscale, attractive, and prejudiced snob who always wants her daughter in the spotlight. Big fish in a small pond - domineering. Has poise and good body awareness, with excellent vocals. Mezzo Soprano with strong belt mix.

Prudy Pingleton (Female, age 40 - 55. Caucasian). Exceptional comedic actress to play various zany roles including Penny Pingleton's uptight and small-minded mother. Also portrays a sadistic high school gym teacher who must be a sharp, funny, inventive character. Minimal-singing role. Simple dance movement required. Mezzo Soprano.

 

Wilbur Turnblad (Male, age 40 - 55. Caucasian.) Working class inventor. Tracy's Father. Sweet, goofy, childlike personality. Excellent comedic timing. Also portrays various roles including a flamboyant fashion boutique owner and a condescending high school principal. Must be an inventive character actor. Simple dance movement required. Baritone.

Dynamites (Females, age 25 - 30. Black-African Descent). An exceptional R&B and soulful pop singer. Must be able to sing tight harmonies and move very well - part of the ensemble. Mezzo Soprano with strong belt mix up to high A.

Little Inez (Female, plays early teen. Black-African Descent). Spunky, tough, streetwise and outgoing. Seaweed's lovable little sister. Must be able to move/dance well - does dancer choreography. Soulful voice with strong belt mix. Mezzo Soprano.

Ensemble: (18 +Genders, all races, to play young high school teenagers, Corny Collins kids, protesters, etc… Excellent dancer/singer/actors who may be required to understudy leading roles.

MARY JANE HEALY - (40-49, White.) The “Perfect Mother” - a polished suburban housewife whose main priority in life is presenting a perfect image to the world; inwardly, she is struggling with processing trauma from her past and battling an addiction to prescription pills. Virtuosic, multiple octave range and strong rock belt.

 

STEVE HEALY - (40-49, White.) A partner at a successful law firm, this workaholic husband and father is struggling with staying present for his family as the pressures of his job and being the breadwinner of the family consume him. He feels his wife Mary Jane slipping away from him. A strong rock singer.

​

FRANKIE HEALY - (Female 16-18. Black) A Black transracial adoptee growing up in an affluent white family, Frankie aspires to be a writer and is passionate about social justice. She is not afraid to stand up for what is right, which creates tension in the Healy home. Extremely strong, dynamic, powerful rock singer, also comfortable with lighter pop style singing. 

 

NICK HEALY - (Male 17-18, White.) The “perfect” son, Nick is an athlete and star student; he often feels like he can’t be his true self because his parents are living vicariously through him; Nick guards his reputation carefully; he fears being exposed and losing everything. Strong rock tenor.

 

BELLA - (Female 18 to early 20’s to play a teen, any ethnicity.) One of Nick’s friends, Bella Fox is an aspiring artist, and has to hold a job in order to make ends meet. Bella has a party girl reputation at school, but there is pain beneath her fun-loving facade. Through the course of the story, she is sexually assaulted by a classmate. Strong rock voice with dynamic range. 

​

JO - (18- early 20’s to play teen, any ethnicity.) Jo has been best friends with Frankie since preschool. Jo is queer and is currently on a gender expansive journey. Jo’s sense of humor is a defense mechanism, a way of hiding their vulnerability. Has a strong, powerful, dynamic rock voice.

 

ENSEMBLE DANCERS: 20s – 30s, all gender identities, all ethnicities, all body types (may understudy other roles) – especially interested in strong dancers with expertise in contemporary dance, hip hop, floor work and freestyle to play various roles within the ensemble plus featured dance pieces. Strong rock vocals an advantage.

ENSEMBLE SINGERS: Playing ages: 20s – 30s, all gender identities, all ethnicities, all body types - Incredibly strong singer/actor/dancers to play various members of the community including a doctor, pharmacist, therapist, teacher, students, and parents, etc. Most ensemble roles will cover principal tracks. The ensemble is the conscience of the story. Ensemble members must have powerhouse rock vocals and move expressively.

Rachel Marron Female 28-35 A famous singer/actress who is at the top of her game. Sexy, confident and self-sufficient. Must be an exceptional powerhouse singer (Whitney Houston). G3 to F5 (belt); should be very comfortable with pop rock, gospel, etc.

Ethnicity: Black / African Descent

 

Frank Farmer Male. 25-35 A former C.I.A. agent, physically fit, lithe and athletic; sharp witted and instinctive; handsome and charismatic. He radiates a silent strength, an American alpha man type. Frank sings one song in a karaoke style. He need not be a major singer, just have the confidence to sing in front of a theatre audience.

Ethnicity: White / European Descent

 

Nicki Marron Female 25-35 Rachel's older sister, late 30s; a very talented singer who has taken a back seat to her sister’s rising star. Quiet type but attractive. Must be a very strong singer. Nicki must have a very soulful, gospel-tinged voice. She sings ballads in the show and so should have a warm resonance, excellent pitch and an ability to riff. Range from G below middle C to E at top of staff.

Ethnicity: Black / African Descent

 

Ensemble (Klingman, Assassin, Rory, Douglas, Ray Court, DJ, Backup Vocalist, College Girls, Jimmy, Stage Manager, Host)

 

Athletic dancers with strong voices that have proficiency in multiple styles (including contemporary and hip-hop). Tumbling/partnering experience is a plus, but not required.

 

Males - much of the show is performed shirtless for the male ensemble, hip-hop, salsa, partnering and jazz dance skills required, singing required but dance skills are priority. All ethnicities encouraged to audition.

 

Females - must be strong in hip-hop, salsa partnering, and jazz dance, plus have tremendous sex appeal, singing required but dance skills are the priority. All ethnicities encouraged to audition.
